Say what ? (1) – ”spit your game”- Notorious B.I.G

After listening to hours and hours of hip hop tracks, I have finally decided to speak about the big elephant in the room no one wants to talk  about.

How many of us really, truly, sincerely understand 90% even 70% of what most English rap songs out there are saying? It gets worse when you listen to hip hop tracks from the Midwest and the South of the USA.

The UK’s rap scene is equally as guilty here. With artists like Dizzee Rascal and Lethal Bizzle spitting so fast they might as well be speaking Martian to me. I sometimes think I’m hearing ”chilling” when the rapper is actually ”killing” somebody 🙂

I don’t know about you but I find it very frustrating when I hear a rap song I like but cant rap alongside because my ears and brain just can’t keep up. So I have decided to start a series for those of us who love our rap songs and want to sing/rap along when we’re listening.

First up is the posthumous release of B.I.G’s ‘spit your game’. Enjoy.

Hint: When you hear a line you don’t understand pause the video, then refer to the lyrics.

“Spit Your Game”
(feat. Twista, Bone Thugs N Harmony)

Spit your game, talk your shit, grab your gat,
Spit your game, talk your shit, grab your gat,

[Chorus (x2):]
Spit your game, talk your shit, grab your gat, call your clicks,
Spit your game, talk your shit, grab your gat, call your clicks,
squeeze your clip hit the right one,
pass that weed I got to light one,
Squeeze your clip
hit the right one,
pass that weed I got to light one,

[Verse (B.I.G.):]
Armed and dangerous, ain’t too many can bang with us,
Straight up weed no angel dust, label us notorious, thug ass niggas that love to bust, it’s strange to us,
You all niggas be scrambling gambling, up in restaurants with mandolins and violins,
We’re just sitting here trying to win, trying not to sin,
High off weed and lots of gin, so much smoke need oxygen,
Steadily countin’ them benjamins, nigga you should to if you knew what this game would do to you,
Been in this shit since ’92, look at all the bullshit I’ve been through,
So called beef with you know who, fucked a few female stars or two,
Then a bluelight niggas knew like
Mike-shit not to be fuck with. Motherfucker better duck quick.
’cause me and my dogs love to buck shit, fuck the luck shit strictly aim
No asperation to quit the game.

Spit your game, talk your shit, grab your gat, call your clicks,
Squeeze your clip and hit the right one
Pass that weed l gotta light one

All them niggas l gotta fight one
All them hoes l gotta like one
Our situation is a tight one
What you wanna do? Fight or run?

[Chorus x2]

Making money livin’ marvelous, in god we trust,
Don’t too many niggas wanna start with us, got big guns in the cars with us,
Bust at any motherfucker acting hard with us,
Don’t really wanna show you what a G.I.B., I’d rather be sippin’ Remy in V.I.P.,
When you hear the music it’ll be by me, Twista with the legendary nigga B.I.G.,
Brooklyn and K-town, when you checking out the flow, you know it’s going rain with persistence,
2 legends on the same track, 2 different plains of existence,
Let’s get it crackin’ I love to bust flows, hit it from the back ’cause I love to buck hoe,
Spit it for the city I love Chicago, cali-coes buck, I love to bust those,
You think you can spit on the Mike like Biggie and flow just as steady as I,
shit is real you know you love him,
you ain’t got “Ready to Die”, “Life After Death”,
give to ’em, however you wanna nigga, that a day after, give it to you, however you wanna nigga,
’cause the shit is giddie, so I carry big heat, screamin’ come and get me,
Twista and Biggie on the Swizz beat,
3 mils I love to make 1, all these cars I love to ride 1,
All these hoes I love to cut 1,
a tribute to BIG,
I love to bust 1,

[Chorus x2]

[Bone Thugs N Harmony]
In the middle of it hammer, bring niggas more drama than they baby mama, nigga wanna battle I will bomb you,
One man but attack like a pack of piranhas, like terracotta,
Niggas always ready for war, they don’t really wanna see a nigga though,
We can hit ’em in a minute, then be finished with ’em
Hit ’em with the venom of a nigga with a sick-o floor
Here with Swizz, oh, no! Nigga’s in trouble,
Somebody better call po-po, it’s gonna be murder when I get to serving them burners (yeah),
And niggas you all heard of me, brick city killer, nigga word to me,
And I’m passed that like Bernie Magic, with a jack that’ll snatch that rep, and stack some, drag him,
Double on that back random, with the bullets stop brand him,
Feeling hard you can’t harass him,
Put it up in your magic, catch the magnum flashing cannons, niggas ain’t ready for this 1, ‘
cause I’m on a mission to get even better than believe it I’m heavily heated,
It’s easy to see it, if you wanna see me let that be the reason.

[Chorus x2]

Life is like …

Life is like…

Life is like watching ”Efiewura”
It can be entertaining or bore you to sleep

Life is like brushing your teeth with soldered iron filings
Bloody messy

Life is like an icecream cone
You have to pay to enjoy it.

Life is like drinking and driving
Very risky

Life is like riding a camel
It can be an enjoyable ride but will leave you smelling like

Life is like shooting down a Boeing 747
Aim high

Life is like making love
You lose focus when you look down

Life is like having lots of shallow friends
It is not around in death

Life is like being taught calculus by a bad math teacher
It will leave you confused or with a headache

Life is like dressing like Kofi Wayo
It has no fashion sense

Life is like a ticking time-bomb
Never on schedule but always on time

Life is like conning a con-artist
It might end up conning you

Life is like talking to a brick wall
It never talks back.

Great paper animation work. Inspirational stuff, especially when you consider the fact that the movie was made with animated cardboard and paper cut-outs.

Pupils Boycott Weevil-Infested Meal

I found this piece on Joyfm’s website. The article brought back fond memories of my rather forgettable stay in boarding school. I remember with a slight grimace the number of times I had to pick or spit out a weevil after eating ”yoo kE gari kE red red” ( beans with fried ripe plantains for those not in the know).

Is this is pure coincidence or do Catholic schools add weevils to their meals as a source of protein for the otherwise malnourished Ghanaian student. Just saying 🙂

Kathryn Bigelow Sweeps The Oscars

This year’s favourites, as it has been for years, was split between the critics’ picks on one side and the audience’s on the other.

As it went down

The night wasn’t filled with too many surprises however as the media becomes better at predicting the winners. Jeff Bridges who was hotly tipped for an award as best actor in a leading role (Crazy Heart), Sandra Bullock for best actress in a leading role (The Blind Side), Christoph Waltz for best actor in a supporting role (Inglorious Basterds), and Mo’Nique for best actress in a supporting role (Precious), all won on the night.

But the obvious talk of the night was who was going to walk home with the best picture and best director awards. Some billed it as showbiz’s equivalent of the Biblical conflict between David & Goliath. And following in the footsteps of David, Kathryn Bigelow did not disappoint. She won not only the aforementioned awards but four more in addition for her movie, The Hurt Locker. Being the highest grossing film of all time (Gone with the wind had that honour with the help of inflation), Avatar walked away with a disappointing three oscars. And what would be more painful, I’m sure for director James Cameron, is losing to his ex-wife. Ouch!

Unknown quantity

Up until the release and the subsequent buzz ”The Hurt Locker” generated, I hadn’t heard of or paid particular attention to Kathryn Bigelow. I had seen K-19 and Point Break about seven years ago, both of which she directed. This was however before my days of noticing other crew members or cast apart from the lead actors/actresses. Or may be I have but just dismissed her like, I am certain most of you do, when the female director in question isn’t Nora Ephron (”You’ve got Mail”, ”Sleepless in Seattle”). I dont blame myself or you for that matter. I blame the boys-only mentality of hollywood and for world cinema in general. How many of you know of Stephen Spielberg? How many of you know of Mira Nair? One receives bags and bags of publicity and money whiles the other, doesn’t. The divide that exists in the top level of the film making talents is going to exist so long film remains difficult to make physically and mentally .

That being said though, women should be given the responsibility and the opportunity to make films, period. Yes, they will feel the pressure and they should, they are after all as human as we are. And yes, they might not turn out to be better film makers than men. But in the same way men are given the opportunity to blow away millions on a flop movie, women should be allowed to do the same; equality now! 🙂

The way forward

In the end David won against all the odds, again. Does this mean hollywood will finally start taking the female film maker( specifically the one in the director’s chair) more seriously? Or will things go back to “normal” after all the hype and noise die down. I for one cant wait for another female director to beat an ”institutionalized” male director like Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino or James Cameron at another awards night.

For a round-up of all the winners of the 82nd Oscar Awards go to OSCAR 2010

Garden Trip

I took these when strolling around my auntie’s garden ( more of a green part of the house; no trace of the usual suspects of a proper garden :0). I took these with my 3mega pixel canon camera. Need to get a better camera.

Happy Birthday Ghana

Feeling Gloomy

Today is my country’s Independence Day and I feel and think no different today than I do on most days; this is with good reason. I am still unemployed, loveless but  in love, disillusioned with life, frequently semi-suicidal, or more appropriately curious about death.

The way I see it, we as Ghanaians  peaked at our last 50th anniversary, and even that was a flop. So for the next 50 years ,at least, we are going down hill in terms of celebrating our  annual independence anniversary.

Same old, same old

I havent even bothered to read the dailies or watch any of the clone morning talk/ newspaper review shows on TV. The same old thing is going to be the  theme of their discussions. Even more depressing is the Independence program line we are fed every year. First would be a line-up of hitherto underexposed Senior High School choirs doing various renditions of our myriad  of patriotic songs after being cleaned for dust. Then two to three hours of the same 40 something year old documentary narrated by some cockney-accented voice-over guy. Then there is the LIVE coverage of the independence march-past festivities which apparently wont feature members of our security service after a couple of them fainted. Hilarious.

And that people, is the way we celebrate our independence. This goes to show that there isn’t much to celebrate after five decades of booting out the baddies. Our people are still dying from some of the most preventable diseases know to man,we are still suffering from an  erratic power and water supply and seemingly daily sky-rocketing prices of commodities. So please for God’s sake excuse me for being the die-hard cynic that I am.

Light at the end of the tunnel

The way I see it we NEED A SECOND INDEPENDENCE.  Liberation of our beloved country from the clutches of corrupt public officials, and even more corrupt leaders who put them there in the first place. Then may be for a change I, and the millions of kindred spirits, will have something to look forward to and actually celebrate our Independence Day when it comes around again.
